There’s nothing quite like soaking in a warm pool of mineral water under star filled winter skies. And El Paso is a reasonable driving distance from several of these spas. From camping to retro-chic, there are places that fit your lifestyle and budget. Just make sure you have a great family car to get you there from Finn’s Discount Auto.
Faywood Hot Springs: This geothermal resort is in Southeast New Mexico, only 2 hours from El Paso. Take Highway 10 to Deming, New Mexico then turn north on 180 West. It’s a funky, rustic place with peacocks roaming the property and a small store that has marshmallows and other emergency provisions you may have forgotten. You can visit for the day, for… or stay overnight …You can rent a site for tent camping, hook up an RV, or rent a cabin overnight. The cabins have outdoor grills for cooking and small fridges and hot water heaters for tea and coffee. Reservations include a private soaking tub for 2 hours. It’s far from the lights of cities, so the night skies are spectacular.
Gila Hot Springs Campground: The Gila National Forest is located two and a half hours northeast of El Paso, off I-25. Here, in high dessert wilderness, the hot springs bubble out of the ground. Accommodations are rustic- it’s camping, or day use only, but it’s in spectacular natural setting, about 4 miles from the Gila Cliff Dwelling National Monument. Cost is $8.00 for camping and $5.00 for day use. It’s slower in the winter, but reservations are still recommended. Gila National Forest has over 1500 hiking trails. And these hot springs are a great place to soak your feet at the end of the day.
Blackstone Hot Springs: The car drive to Truth & Consequences New Mexico is just shy of 2 hours straight north on I 25. Truth or Consequences was originally called “Hot Springs” New Mexico because it was actually floating on a huge hot spring. Blackstone Hot Springs is a trendy retro motel with mineral baths flowing straight from the 110-degree aquifer. It’s available for day use- tubs for day use run $25.00 for 50 minutes for 2 people, and an additional $10.00 per person up to four. Rooms and suites range from $90.00-160.00 a night. Be sure and make reservations well in advance – especially with the holidays coming up.
